Key Stuck

skeenut

Novice
I'm afraid I know the answer to this already.
I just tried the key for the cabin lock. It's stuck. Really stuck.
The key went in horizontally, I gave it a counter-clockwise 1/4 turn...and nothing. Handle didn't lock, but the key will not rotate at all, except in a loosey-goosey kind of sloppy way and it will not come out either. Door hand works normally.
I've been jiggling and jiggling to no avail.
I can either leave the key permanently in place or, and this is the answer I think I know already, get the trailer to a locksmith.
Do I have any alternatives?

I would start with a good squirt of WD-40 around the key. Give it a few minutes then do the wiggle thing some more. if that doesn't do it, add some heat with a hair dryer and try again.

WD-40 didn't work. Heating didn't work.
Took handle off and brought to local locksmith. Much jiggling and wiggling later it opened. Must've been an open-says-a-me kind of locksmithing voodoo.
He found nothing wrong. Just a freaky one of those things. He suggested that the handle be perfectly aligned so the pins in the tumbler could fall easily into place without any wiggly coercion.
INOW, just be careful with it.
He also couldn't put a new core into it. If it goes it means a new handle.
So there.
