Hunting Island - Beaufort Week

Discussion in 'Adventures & Excursions' started by Warren Mary Ellen, Aug 8, 2021.

  1. Had a great 4 days at Hunting Island State Park near Beaufort, SC. The park is really beautiful and if you like the beach, you kind of the place to yourself if you stay down on the beach at the campground. Day use up the beach by lighthouse was busy. The lagoon at the far end is worth checking out too and is a good place to check out wildlife. That end of the island was really altered by a recent hurricane. There are dead trees standing in the surf now and of course they used to be on the island. Other than hanging out on the beach, the other thing we went to do was to tour the new Reconstruction Era National Park which is only a couple of years old. We did the Visitors Center downtown including the walking tour and the Camp Saxton/Fort Frederick area.

Grabbed some good seafood to cook at the campsite from the nearby Gay Fishing Company (their shrimp were used in the Forrest Gump movie). One night we did boiled shrimp and blackened scallops. Went back the next day for fish and ended with Mahi-mahi 9blackened it too) and flounder. Somehow we ended up with 80 degree days most of the trip which was nice and unexpected for this time of year.

See pics for the attempted stowaway who tried to hitch a ride home with us.
