Hitch Care

The ball on your trailer hitch is not supposed to be used dry & shiny. Spread a finger full of auto grease on the ball and it will work its way around the receiver on the trailer where needed. Add more grease as required if the ball looks dry.

It will get very dirty/black. Hitch shops sell plastic hitch ball covers to pop on when the ball isn't in use. This keeps the dirty grease off your pants and off other things when being stored. We keep ours in a sandwich bag when the hitch is being used. Unhook trailer, put on ball cover, proceed.

Advantages: The ball and receiver parts will not wear out or rust. The hitch won't squeak or moan. You will never consider sticking your fingers in the receiver to move the trailer around - after the first time.

Thank you - I was thinking about this yesterday while listening to the ball squeaking on the way down the road. I'm glad to hear this is a normal thing with an easy fix.

Get an old tennis ball, split it on one side just enough to slide over the ball. Keeps the ball grim free for the most part.

    Your welcome, Evan.

Folks, please don't do it the red neck way which will remove the grease and look tacky too. Just spend the $3.00 and buy a plastic ball cover that will keep the grease on the ball.

The tennis ball will stay on in a car wash. I lost three of those black plastic ball covers before I did the 'redneck' way!
