Have you tried????

We are looking at a Eccotemp L5. This is tankless propane water heater. Anybody got any experience with it?

Also, when I have camped of line, I have needed to add water to the camper water system. Who has found an easy way to add h2o from a portable container?

Thanks,

Steve,

Is there a reason you are not considering the Coleman heater? From what I can tell they function very similar but the Coleman hooks to the trailer with no mods like you need to do with the Eccotemp. I know you are planning to use a separate tank so that isn't an issue but I am curious to why otherwise.

For filling in the field without a hose just use a medium sized plastic funnel. The angle we mount the fill opening at is situated just so that a funnel will set in there nicely.

Steve,

For hot water and outdoor showers or washing up we have an 8 qt enamel cooking pot. We fill it with water from a stream and warm it on the stove. A coffee pot full is enough to do dishes with hot water mixed with a little cold. Our Coleman D battery shower pump goes in the pot and 7 qts. is the perfect amount for a shower at 102o. Of course the spaghetti went into the pot an hour earlier. We don't use tank water for showers and get a week out of a tank.

For refilling while camping buy the right container (s) with a spigot sized screw cap or some come with a spout. RV sites sell a clear tube that screws on to the end of a hose fitting. You just have to play with the sizes/adapters. The 3" army surplus cans and a funnel is not the way to go to fill the tank, but can be used to fill the pot. IE: Fill the pot and spare the tank.

When I was camping using a PUP that didn't have a water heater,
We kept a "Crock Pot" going 24/7. Had plenty of HW for washing dishes, and taking sponge bath.

Thanks, My main need is while I am on an extended hunting trip. I have always just taken a pail of hot water off behind a bush. I like the idea of not using tank water, Hilditch, but I just haven't decided. Again, thanks for the ideas,
Steve

Steve,

I looked at several options for a water container and settled for this one:

The spout stores inside the top when not needed. Overall I'm happy with it - but it's not perfect. I wish it had a real air vent which would make pouring faster.

The product description says it is transparent so you can see the water level. Mine is not. Not a big deal for me, but I mention it in case this matters to you.

Bob, I like that. And I agree, although it says transparent, it is not. It may translucent. Were it to be transparent, could you even see it in the add?
Thanks,

One other option for water heaters too. Not really for the shower setup Steve wants to do but a great simple one for the doing the dishes. That is the Zodi. Had a chance to get a good review from a customer using one the other day. He uses his on the galley stove. It fills with water and he just heats it up and takes the hot water out it's spigot for doing the dishes. Real low tech but does a marvelous job for providing hot water water around the galley.

For refilling water on the road, take a plastic water bottle, stick the neck into the refill spout, and cut off the bottom to create a makeshift funnel. You need someone to hold it in place while you refill, but it has certainly worked for us.

Here is a product that might do the trick.

www.thermette.com

I have witnessed one of these in operation and it heats water boiling hot in a matter of minutes.
