NC State Park Falls Lake - Rolling View

  1. Headed up to Durham, NC to visit our daughter who is there until December and camped in Rolling View Campground at Falls Lake State Recreation Area. This is one of the nicest campgrounds we have stayed in. We were in Loop A for 3 nights on Site 16 (pull through) which proved to be a great site. Our trip was midweek so it is pretty empty, but most of the people who were there were either close to the bathroom or at the end of the loop which put you closer to the lake. Site 16 was about midway between each of those spots and had that area to ourselves. When you look at the map of the campground it appears that the next site, Site 18 is a long way past 16 put 18 has a long driveway that comes close but not on top of you.

Sites have a gravel driveway and a huge gravel tent pad with fire ring, lantern post, and picnic table. The tent pad on our site was 30 X 30 feet. Back in sites have long drive ways to get you way off the road. The exception to this would be the sites closer to the lake on the loop which are also closer together. Most of the back in sites would require a 90 degree turn to back in your unit as well. Sites nearer the lake would be a little friendlier for this site. Site 18 would not be a tough back in. There are some double sites where you start into the site and it forks for 2 sites in one. (you do pay a double fee for this). Site 17 was one of these on this loop. Bathrooms are some of the nicest ones we have seen anywhere. They are large, with showers including a handicapped shower stall. Automatic hand dryers are next to the sink. The bathroom also had a ventilation fan which I am surprised more southeastern campgrounds don't have due to the humidity. There is a trail to access the fishing pier in the park and there is another trail for you to walk to the swimming beach on the lake from Loop A. Back in Sites will be shadier than the pull through sites but we did not have a problem. The area with the picnic table on our site was in the shade all day.

We drove through Loop B which is bigger and it does have a playground. Many of the sites closer to the bathroom and playground would only have partial shade. On this loop, I would want to be closer to the lake or in one of the sites the back into the woods on the edges of the loop. The sites on this loop that back to the lake are much more elevated than Loop A above the water. The fishing pier is in this loop. You can use the trail to get to the swimming beach but it is further from that than Loop A. We did not check out Loop C since it did not have electricity on the sites.

There is a marina with a store in the park. They have basic camping supplies, and you can a rent a kayak or canoe down there as well. The day use area has a playground, picnic area and swimming beach. At the boat ramp there is a a community building that can be rented and it is right on the lake. The Mountains to the Sea trail that connects the NC mountains to the ocean comes through the park.

Our last night here was our 100th night in Jeremiah. We liked this park a lot and will come back to it. The sites were well designed with plenty of distance from your neighbors and it is beautiful mixed hardwood/pine forest which provides plenty of shade. Our daughter is in Durham until December so hopefully we make it back up in the fall. It is about 20 minutes from Durham and the same to Raleigh. There are some parts of the park that are not contiguous to this area but we did make it those.
