EZ Up

Deb

Novice
I know that there has been a lot of discussion about tents, canopies, etc. We've always loved our EZ Up over the galley. When we got our first one we also purchased the side panels. Decided if we were going to use them, we should have a second EZ Up for the picnic table or other area. So,today we picked up a second 10 X 10 EZ Up at Blaine's Farm and Fleet. Only $50. Sale ends tomorrow. My apologies to those of you not in Wisconsin.

I'm here with a question about the EZ up tent too so I was hoping this would be an ok place to post it. Looking for tent gear for my first legitimate biking and camping trip. I'm doing the trip alone and I know some people don't think that is safe seeing as I am 5'4 and 115 pounds but I think the serenity and meditation will be just what I need. I'm at this forum because I need some overall advice. My trip isn't until the Spring but I want to be prepared. I will need a tent and I'm worried about Spring rain so I was also thinking about looking into a canopy for over my tent. My first question is going to show how much of a beginner I am to this biking and camping thing. How do you find a tent and canopy small enough to carry on the bike? For the canopy, does anyone know if this ez up kind is small enough to haul with me? I appreciate any advice you can give me on any aspects of my first trip!

Sammi,

An EZ up would not be appropriate equipment for a biking trip. EX ups are heavy, annoying to open.

The gear you choose will depend upon your biking method: road bike or motorcycle.

An excellent quality tent will include a top quality rain fly to keep you dry. Spend time visiting outdoors stores from major retailers to the local retailer.

Good luck.

Sammi share a bit more information on your mode of travel? Could be that you are talking about driving a car, camping while out and taking your bike with you for day trips.

As Jean said most tents these days have rain flys. Kind of a tent over a tent. Depending on your mode of travel you can get a 2 person tent that weighs in at under 5 lbs with the rain fly and ground footprint. The lighter the tent usually the more it will cost.

Good source to read and shop is an REI store and their online. I've got a Big Agnes 2 person Copper Spur UL3. While they advertise this as a 3 person tent you will find that most folks buy one side up. Maybe two adults and a small person but not much room for three 'normal' size folks. I am usually alone and like the extra room for my stuff inside. Nice and dry in the rain. Will use my tent with my CI when I get it.

As for the EZUp they are also known in the art show circuit as EZup-EZGone. Very prone to being destroyed in wind storms. Save your money and if you just want a canopy look at something like the REI Alcove with a set of windscreens. That would be a nice addition to a tent and your car.

Welcome to the forum. Lots of good information here.

There is a small pop-up type travel trailer tent that I've seen towed behind a motorcycle - not sure what kind of bike you mean. The EZ-Up has a heavy frame that is meant to popup in seconds. But you pay for the time savings in weight. Not a good fit.

If you are on a good old-fashioned human powered bike I think you want the lightest thing possible. Perhaps even a tarp? I'm guessing you will already have a tent for sleeping in? As Gary, suggested maybe the rainfly will be sufficient.

Sammi--
Friends of ours who went cross-country (human powered bike) preferred to tow along a small bike trailer. Having commuted for awhile by bike myself, the trailer they used would be easier to pack and balance then loading up front and back panniers. If you are using a recumbent trike, then not so much. Bottom line, an EZ-Up would be heavy for either a motorcycle or bicycle. A great site on bicycle camping is:

If cost is not an option, you may want to take a peek at the Apache tents.

A lot of cyclists (and motorcyclists) like them because they are lightweight "instant pop-up" tents. These are ideal for the quick set up (and take down) for the one-night stops. You can check out the Harley forums for more info. If you purchase the 4-season rain-fly it extends the tents usefulness.
Try to stay as light as you can, and test the gear out close to home (maybe car camping to start). Sounds like a fun trip. I hope you get the info you need. Best of luck!

Sounds like quite an adventure. We use an REI Half Dome 2 person tent when backpacking. It's got a rain fly for bad weather use. Weighs about 5# & sells for under $ 200. Something that size should give you enough room to even keep some gear inside with you. Good luck with your trip planning.
