Extra Keys

Tour 931

Ranger
Now that I'm getting ready for a short trip I'm getting last minute things together which includes extra keys to both the Outback and the Camper-Inn. I usually keep the extra TV keys in the trailer and the extra trailer keys in the TV. Does anyone else do this?

We travel with lots of extra keys! A complete set of trailer keys in each of our pockets, and a set in the TV. We've not thought about a set of car keys in the trailer, but that's not really been a problem area for us.

For me, the extra set set of trailer keys in the TV is used more in the driveway and garage, not so much when camping.

It didn’t take but one time in which I was locked out of my truck with the engine running in 95 degree heat. Luckily the door wasn’t completely shut and I borrowed a coat hangar from the camp host to get in. We both carry a full set of keys now.

Yep

I have a question which is somewhat related to this thread. We were able to copy the cabin key but after checking with several places we haven't been able to find a place that can copy the galley key. Did you get another set of keys from Camp Inn or did you find someone that had a blank that would work?

The cabin key and the galley key are the same blank actually. We hear of locksmiths often thinking they are different and don't have one or the other. If they have one, just have them use that one for the other key also. The head is a different shape but the actual key part is the same.

I keep trailer (wheel locks, bicycle rack locks etc.) stashed with the car. Same for car key. My thinking is I may get locked out of the car too. Travel partners are provided keys too.

Before cars keys had chips in them they were very slim and I kept a key in my wallet. Can't do that anymore for the Outback but a spare trailer key will fit. I have also thrown one in a shoe at times.

That is a good idea! I never thought of that. I have worried over getting locked out of both car and TD at the same time, but a cabin or galley key in the wallet would work.
Thanks!
I got the idea from my 1991 Toyota pickup. It came with a one-time plastic key made for a wallet. It looked like a credit card and you simply punched the key out.

Huh? Cabin key and galley key are not the same blank. I did as you said and the one they made for the galley doesn't work. It won't even go in the slot.

Well, what the heck Greg? I do it all the time at our local hardware store. Never ran into an issue with it. Can you determine what is different about your key somehow?

The key cut is different but the blank is the same. I had an extra cabin key made from a blank that looks different but it works. The key on the right opens the cabin.

We purchased a Hitch Safe on Amazon for extra keys.
Amazon.com: HitchSafe HS7000 Key Vault: Automotive
Our 550 has the 2" hitch receiver option and the Hitch Safe is secured in the receiver. We keep extra keys for both the truck and trailer (and hitch and wheel locks) in the safe. It has a 4 digit combination that you set and a dust cover to conceal and protect. Haven't ever had a problem with leakage but we keep the keys in a small Ziploc bag, just in case. Of course now that I have told every one it's not much of a secret anymore.
