Email, SPAM, and change password

I learned something new today, which some will benefit from, and others have known for a long time.

My yahoo email has been sending out emails to friends/family with no text content. Some have called inquiring what was sent. Knew it was spam. So today I was going to create a new account, when a coworker said all I have to do is change the password.

So, I have changed passwords and hope the SPAM stops.

What have others done, change passwords or create new accounts?

How on earth do the "Spam" send the unwanted emails?
