Driving To The North Rim Of The Grand Canyon

Has anyone traveled from Jacob Lake, AZ to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon on AZ 67? I would be interested in knowing if this is a pretty decent road or if it's more like a washboard 4-wheeler path as someone had described some of the state roads.

I think it's about a 45 mile drive and may not be open until mid-May.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Hutch

We drove that road two years ago. My husband was driving, but I remember nothing unusual about the road. It was a beautiful drive, and we absolutely LOVED the North Rim.

We were there in July, and the weather was dry.

Hutch,
I agree, good road and the beauty of the north rim along with the fact that you find far fewer people here than the South Rim makes for a great stay. Be aware that in mid May the nights will be a bit chilly.

Hi Leo,

Happy to receive your confirming comments about the road. I have booked 4 nights in the north rim campground beginning May 15. This is the first day the park opens it's 2011 season. You can hike the 27 miles over from the south rim, but this is the first day you can drive in on Hwy 67. I'll be outfitted for any type weather I encounter so, low temps shouldn't be a big factor.

Regarding your earlier recommendation about Navajo National Monument, I have reserved a permit to hike in and camp at Keet Seel on May 31. I wanted to do this park first to avoid backtracking, but the opening day here is May 29. No big deal, I'll work in Antelope Canyon and Zion between the north rim visit and the date I need to be at Navajo National Monument.

It looks like I will be coming through your town early in May, but I'm not sure of the date yet. Have you determined when you will be leaving to pick up your teardrop?

Backing up what LeoJan said about chilly weather at night: We were at the North Rim over July 4, and it was not warm in the evenings. Every evening people gather at the North Rim Lodge to watch the sunset, and the staff builds a HUGE fire (in a fireplace I could stand in) and serves drinks. About half the people were wearing lightweight fleece jackets -- in July! I'm sure you'll want a good coat in May.

Hutch,
I have received the first pictures of the build in progress. Assuming there are no hitches or glitches during the process we are anticipating a much anticipated trip the first week of May returning home either the 8th or 9th.
Leo
