Side Tent Dog In Your Sidetent

PaulaV

Novice
If I have a teardrop, I have to have the sidetent due to a 67 pound very loveable sweet long legged labradoodle. He doesn't sleep in our bed at home and I don't expect that when we're camping.

I have concerns with colder weather and having my dog Jack out in the side tent with our door closed. In the mountains of NC we can have lovely warm days in the spring and fall but then temps can dip down into the 40's sometimes 30's depending. At home he sleeps near our bed on the floor usually. I wonder about the cold and him "being outside" in the tent.

For you dog owners, is this something I need to be concerned about? Or is it unfounded? Any input to making him more comfortable in colder weather? If there is a thunderstorm, ack, he doesn't like thunder and we'll probably have to put him in the car. He just pants alot and is restless. Or maybe just having him in the car is better? I appreciate the feedback.

PaulaV,
We haven't received our 560 yet, but will in a week or so (hopefully!) But our plan is to put our 21 pound fluffy Sheltie Jack in bed with us or on the couch to sleep. I have a large collapsible dog crate that I can also put him in in the side tent. Fortunately we don't mind sleeping with him, heat is as much a problem for us as cold is for you...it will be too hot forf Jack outside, day or night, in the car or not...so it's either leave him home or sleep with him. Have you thought of trying to bed break him?

We have a 30# sheltie who sleeps in the middle at the foot of the bed (loves being under the over hang). I would think one of those cots that are made of pvc pipe that would keep him off the ground would probably very helpful. If cold I would put one of those emergency blankets (cheap - sort of tin foil like) under a blanket on the cot. This would keep his body temperature warming him. In the summer if you have a fantastic fan and leave a window open to the screen tent that would work in most weather.

We have 2 standard poodles -46 and 52 lbs. WE had PLANNED on them sleeping in the side tent.
Lets just say that lasted 10 minutes...
At home they sleep on the floor on their dog beds, which we had brought camping and out in the side tent. We had the door open into the tent so we could reassure them we were there. I think the new environment made them want to be closer.
Somehow we all managed to sleep! One sleeps under the overhang and the other at shoulder level between us. Its very cozy......

thanks for your replies. This gives me some ideas. I won't know how he'll respond but I have some options.
Linda--bed break? What's that mean? He doesn't sleep with us just on the floor nearby and not even all the time so no worries on that part. Hey our dog is named Jack also!
Pat-good thoughts on the dog cot idea
Eileen-funny about your poodles in the side tent-2 standards in a 550? yipes. Although.....I'm sure yours are just as foldable as mine. Some how even though Jack is long legged he can fold up into a neat little ball sometimes. We shall see.

Thats why we didn't get a heater!

We also leave them home for many of the longer trips (we have a sweet dog exchange deal with friends who have a golden retriever -they were all raised together and move between houses seamlessly). When the 18 month old is about 3 we will probably take them with us more. He is in the dufous adolescent male phase of life (please tell me this is just a phase!) and I think a bit of maturity will make it easier to take him with us.

hum...um, I think I'll just stick to sleeping with the husband. I love my dog but not in my bed. Stormy nights camping...he'll have to go into the car. He fidgits and pants so much he keeps up awake or I'll stick him with the son in his tent!

Jack's a doofus too! 13 mos. old - cute, crazy and cuddly....love my dawg...
