  1. Wilderness Road Campground is a great campground with new bathhouses. Largest shower rooms I’ve ever seen before & there are 2 at each bathhouse. You have a park bench to put your clothes on. Separate from the toilet facilities, but right next to it. Screen door on the bathroom is nice in the humid south. Remember to shut the door when you go in on the men’s side. You can see the urinal through the screen door. LOL.

Roads and sites have been recently repaved. You will need some way to secure your side tent on by asphalt. Some sites have electricity, but you will have to go to a spigot near the bathhouse for water. As you look at the map to reserve a site, you want to be on the right hand side of the road as you are driving across the loop. Those sites have longer driveways & are a flatter. If you pick on the left you will be on a slope backing uphill into the site. The sites on the right also have more room for the picnic tables.

Do the Gap Cave tour especially on a hot day. Takes an hour or so to do & you on a sidewalk the whole time. Lots of steps though. You can reserve a spot on the tour a month in advance. Lots of hiking here & since it is a historical park a lot of ranger talks. We saw one on Dulcimers at the Visitors Center. Go up to the overlook for the view, it’s worth it. Go to the town of Cumberland Gap to hike through a tunnel.

The ranger said they mostly fill up on the holiday weekends, fall color weekends & in May they have an unofficial Bluegrass music weekend that fills up too. During the week they are usually sparsely filled and that is what we found. 2022 is the first year you can reserve a site. It is not far off US 25E & could be good stopping place if you are just traveling through the area. US 25E is a good road to avoid Knoxville traffic too. The park is in Tennessee, Kentucky, & Virginia, The campground is in Virginia.
