Cookbook App

Discussion in 'Technology Corner' started by SarahNell_and_Robert, May 20, 2013.

  1. Curious how many CI owners have and travel with iPads?

Also curious if any would enjoy the value of having a cookbook app specific to CI recipes? Basically repurposing the awesome collection that's posted here but as a tablet app?

So do you build apps? What software do you use. I would like to have a app to log camp outs there does not seem to be much in the App Store. Tried using Max Journal but would like something more like a database. Like what you can do with MS Access. Any thoughts?

I would contribute to a camping journal app!

Pat, not sure what you are looking for but would a spreadsheet work? I haven't downloaded it but there is an app called iSpreadsheet Free.

  6. Jean—the link you posted definitely looks to cover the camp log. Pat I design tablet based apps currently and haven't moved into phone apps. Something like a cookbook or digital magazine type app I could easily produce, deploy and keep updated for CI users free of charge, but there are many thresholds to app distributions that eventually require more pay to play:)

The extended camping database though definitely has my interest. I'd love to work toward simplifying something like the ultimatecampgroundlog and updating the user experience end of it.

    Thanks for yall's feedback!

Jean that is the idea but it is not for an iPad.
Sarah Nell like Evan I would be willing to pitch in on cost. Would it be a huge project? I could help come up with needed fields.

Sarah Nell if you have the ability I think we all could give you imput and feedback I build Access database for a private school so love database functionality. I use windows laptop and iPad and iPhone. Something that would work on iPad alone would be wonderful.

I can just imagine you scratching your brain now.

As a graphic designer you might be interested in a little history. I taught phototypesetting on one of the first computer typesetters built - in 1970.

Taught a lot of "hot metal men" our typesetter had 64K and cost $64,000 and ran with paper tape input. It was bigger than 2 couches.

I travel with my iPad. I currently am using a spreadsheet to log my excursions. Just a simple layout that logs the location, how many miles I traveled, nights stayed, and a brief description of the trip.

A camping cookbook could be useful and fun.

  10. Pat that's such a great story—I actually briefly did some phototypesetting for a small community newspape when I was in high school:) Crazy to think back on the older processes.

So I'm digging because now I really want to work on this journaling app. There are rv/camping apps; there are journaling apps; there are calendar apps that let you store so much more than appts. There isn't one that combines them all with camping as the main focus.

I'll keep you posted as I find out more. Thanks for the input yall!

    Sarah Nell,

If we had something to keep track of miles, outings and nights that would be great!

    Sarah Nell sounds exciting

Evan should this be moved to technology?

For recipes, I found All Recipes very helpful and they have the apps for Android and iPad I believe... I use Android, Galaxy III and Nexus 10... sort of kewl.
You can get a stand to hold the pads and screen protector so just pull up the recipe and voila'... done...

it also has a "Spinner" you tell it what you have on hand and it'll search menus...
easy to join and get rid of the initial ads...

I'll have to check out that app, thanks Frank.
I've made a VERY similar steak in the cast iron skillet and have to say it was one of the best steaks I've ever had.

I use that he at home too Frank. We have lots of favorites on there. Definitely good stuff! And I admit to trying some of the adult bevvies, and the are good! :) But then I am no pro when it comes to that. Jeez, I only have the one blender! Ha!

  17. Evan, by outings do you mean group events like CICO? And is that segregated in note taking for personal classification or with the intent of social sharing these events through an app?

I'm gathering y'all's input to date to present back as a more organized app proposal. Talked to two of my colleagues and we're really interested in doing this.

  18. Pat, feel free to send me any fields you would preference for this app idea. I was going to pull pertinent ones off of that database link, but certainly any input with hierarchy of important fields would be great. You can email me too if you'd like, sarahnell@digcreativestudio.com.

    Sarah Nell,

Outings are for any time you take your trailer out to go camping. Each outing can contain any number of nights. (One-to-many relationship in database language.)
