SC State Park Colleton State Park

Discussion in 'Southeast' started by Warren Mary Ellen, Jan 1, 2019.

  1. We didn't camp here but we are in the process of trying to hit all 47 state park sites in South Carolina, so while we were at Colleton State Park we checked out the campground. This is a small state park and would be a good option for someone traveling up or down I-95 because it is pretty close to the intestate near Walterboro, SC. The park is located on the Edisto River which is a black water river due to the tannins from the bald cypress trees in the river and connected swamps that color the water. In the dense shade the water appears to be black but is really about the color of tea. The state has a canoe trail along the river and it would be possible to canoe/kayak across about half of the state. There are 4 state parks along the route and Colleton is the second a kayaker would get to.

The campground itself was very nice and very small with around 25 sites under some tall pines that would give you a lot of shade. There is one Restroom/ shower facility in the middle plus there is one cabin if you meeting up with a non-camper. A few sites would give you a view of the river. There are some steps and a trail to get you down to the river to kayak or fish. Typical sites - gravel with a picnic table and fire ring. This was well maintained campground. The one drawback I could see is that the campground was not far off the 2 lane highway it is located on. The park is small and was originally a wayside with the highway back then being part of the highways early car travelers use to get to and from Florida. This means you will hear a lot of car and truck traffic and can even see the highway through the trees. It is probably not a destination spot unless you are looking to catch a monster catfish in Lowcountry South Carolina or a Kayaker, but it would be a great stop for the night or two for someone traveling up/down I-95 or on US 17 to get to/from Florida. The location is probably a 3 hour or so drive to Jacksonville, FL to the south.
