Anyone know purpose of the small hole (with screen) above the window of both doors?

It is just that, a vent. If everything is closed up, it's pretty tight, it can be hard to close the door.

So it is an ear drum rupture safety valve?

yes, ear drum type. It’s not enough for ventilation, just enough so that the door can close. From what I remember, without that, they are built so nice and air tight that it was difficult to actually close the door!

This thread reminds me of my 1961 VW bug I had in the 70’s. If all the windows were up it was almost impossible to close the door because it was so airtight.
