Child At Heart

I think most of us are children at heart, loving our "coolest forts ever" campers....

I'm also addicted to "urban archeology" types of videos --- visiting places that are abandoned. Be that malls, or entire cities (Gary Indiana)

Has anyone here visited Emerald Mountain in NC? (https://www.landofoznc.com/about)

Any camping recommendations in the area? I think I found a trip for next year's calendar...probably for the autumn festival season.

  2. We’ve camped at Linville Falls Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway. That area is really nice & in the the NC High Country. The 3 biggest Ski resorts in NC are in that area and a lot of it is 4000 ft elevation so it is not as hot in the summer as most of the South. The three towns up there are Boone, Blowing Rock & Banner Elk. Been a few years since we’ve been up there, but we like it a lot.

Some scenes from the movie”The Green Mile” were filmed at the Cone Mansion near Blowing Rock. We used to live in Hickory, NC which is about one hour south of that area.

Will add this to my list of places to go. I'm starting to need a full-size map of the US where I can start putting tags of places I want to visit :)

I am not a huge fan of Tom Hanks. I can't say why, he just does not resonate with me. I think he is an actor who can be summarized with "Tom Hanks as..." -- kind of the same way John Wayne was, though I like John Wayne. Hanks steps onto the set and is himself as a character.

That all said, it doesn't necessarily mean everything he is in is bad. The Green Mile and Saving Private Ryan are two of his films that I genuinely like. Not to mention Forrest Gump, the one film where Hanks really disappeared. (I almost wanted to say "didn't have to act at all...")

I think my distant for Hanks really started with Da Vinci code -- probably the worst film ever.

This looks like a good place to go, perhaps in August, just as the summer heat breaks and you are ready for "cooler" temperatures made slightly cooler by a couple of thousand feet of elevation. I think I need to buy a map of the US and start putting tacks where I want to go --- this is getting harder to remember all these interesting sounding places.

See my comment in the other thread....

I've got a Indiana map that I used for keeping my "Kettle corn" shows pinned --- I'm thinking about doing that for a whole wall. I want to look for a 5 foot wide sized US map and put it on a corkboard. Just a little bigger I supposed than the map at CampInn and just start pinning places I've been, or want to go too.

Routes -- probably a little less concerned about that --- ideally I'd travel 3-4 hours in a day -- and for that short of a trip detailed planning isn't too hard, just pick a city and drive in that general direction -- at least in the midwest. Mountain areas is a little different story :)
