Brown County Indiana this weekend

With temps going up to the 80's we decided to take advantage and get in our 1st TD trip of the season. We've never been to this park, but have heard good things about it over the years. If anyone's been there I'd love to hear about it.

Will leave Thursday afternoon and return Easter Sunday in time to celebrate with the 'kids' and have some home-made pizza's.

Our 'baby' is almost 22, and only the 23 year old was mildly upset about not being able to search for eggs. As no one lives with the oldsters any more, they won't be rolling in until the afternoon, by which time we will be home (with baskets ready, I'm sure, as Peggy won't be able to NOT put them together).

This just may become a new tradition...

Here's the link to the park Brown County State Park, IN

Ken,
My wife is from the area. She only has childhood memories of Nashville Indiana. She just said it is the place you go to camp. She still has family in the area. I am looking foward to you impression of the spot. We could take the TD and stay there when we visit.

Steve,
I will definitely post our experience here. I've been reading a bit more about the park and it sounds like there are some nice hiking trails - about 15 miles in total - in the park. The trails should be fairly dry as there's no rain in the forecast there until Sat. I am ready to get out and camp.

What a beautiful park - I can't believe how hilly it is here. Great sites, plenty of space between them. We're overlooking a deep valley with long views of the surrounding hills. Nice breeze up here, too. Great weather, probably low to mid 80's. We did a 6-8 mile hike this morning, then lunch at the lodge. Now back in the campsite, I was able to tether my cell phone to the laptop and got an internet connection. Well, break's over, out for a bike ride.
Ken

Hi Ken,
We can't use our camper yet, so we are just a little jealous that you are camping already. Nothing is open around here yet. What did you mean when you said you tethered your cell phone to your laptop?
Thanks,
Charlie

I can jump in and answer this one:

Blackberrys (and probably some other phones too) have an internet connection. You can plug the blackberry into a laptop with a USB cord, and use the phone's internet connection for your laptop. Verizon provides software for your laptop that allows it to do this - not sure if AT&T or Sprint do as well, but wouldn't be surprised.

Thanks Evan,
That could be handy to know and use. I'll have to look for an appropriate usb cable and try it out.
Charlie

Yes, you can check email, post photos on this site :) and browse the net - but watching movies over Netflix doesn't work so well.

The cable is probably a mini-USB to USB cable - it depends on the phone. But before you go buy one, I'd make sure you have the right kind of phone and service. If you're not sure call your carrier, they should be able to tell you were to download the software too.

Charlie,
I am on Sprint's network and using a Palm Pre phone. I connect using WiFi, but could use a USB cable as well. This is the 1st time using it, and it's slow because we are roaming on a 1x network, but we're connected.
We got a little rain here this morning, so we took a ride into Bloomington and checked out Indiana University's campus - very nice. Had lunch in Nashville, IN and then did a hike in the state park. This will make a great fall color trip.

Thanks Evan and Ken,
I know that I can go on the internet with my phone ( not a blackberry), but I will check with my provider to make sure that I can do it. It sounds better than adding another line on my cellphone.

For what it is worth,
We don't have DSL or Cable available where we live. To have high speed internet, we must go with HughesNet or a similar service. We chose to go with a Netbook with Verizon as the carrier. We have been very pleased with it. It is not tied to any earth bound equipment.
It is the price of a new cell phone. About $70 month. There is a limit to the monthly data transfer. I think we have 5g. We have never come close to that.
Steve

Brown Cty is noted for their fall colors. I can remember my Mother and her friend taking a trip from Mich. to BC.
They loved it.

Hi George,
That's what we've always heard, too. In fact, we were talking with a local restaurant owner tonight who said that they see about 50% more people in town during the fall colors than at any other time of year.
We'd love to get back here in the fall sometime.
Ken

A few pictures from the weekend trip...

We're back from our 1st outing of the year - it was a great weekend and a State Park that I'd recommend. The weather was excellent - we slept with the doors open & used the optional door screens. Here's a few pictures (using Evan's ftp hosting site):

Since the weather was so good, we went with a minimal setup - no canopy or side tent.

Re: A few pictures from the weekend trip...

Wow - sleeping with the doors open - can't wait until we get to do that.

On a side note, I noticed that your cooler table leg wasn't quite long enough. I have had this probabl as well when the ground is uneven and we are using the leveling jacks.

I wonder if it would be possible to get a longer leg?
Or is the length constrained by the space in the galley?

Re: A few pictures from the weekend trip...

Being an outsider, I may get slammed on this one.... Could the leg be an adjustable one, like awning poles?

Re: A few pictures from the weekend trip...

Yes, it is adjustable - but on perfectly level ground without using the leveling jacks you will already be near the end of its reach. So, when the conditions are less than perfect it ends up being short quite often.

The leg on the cooler table does adjust like the side tent poles, George, but, as Evan guessed, the length is limited by the space in the galley where it is stored (on top of the cooler in the middle section). The extra length was needed since we were on a sloped site, something that has happened before. I am thinking about getting some of those 'Lego' looking plastic blocks that I've seen people use to put under their trailer wheels. I have to say that the Craftsman ratchet tool box was the perfect thickness, though...
