We spent 4 days at the Army Corp. Sandy Lake Recreation Area Sandy Lake, Mississippi River Headwaters - Sandy Lake - Recreation.gov last week.
This a campground we have stayed at several times in the past, and have enjoyed.
There are a couple types of sites depending on what your priorities are.
We usually bring our kayaks when we go there, so choose one of the sites on the peninsula, several of which have their own private dock. Those sites however are on the small side, with no separation between sites other than a split rail cedar fence, but do have trees on the lake side of the site.
Since we were camping with my sister and her husband on one side of us, that made it a little nicer. These sites are also the closest to the nice shower / bathroom / laundry facility at the entry end of the peninsula.
Most of the non-peninsula sites are on the other side of the dam. They are larger, and have a nice separation between sites, with more tall trees for shade, but little to no underbrush for privacy between sites. There are boat launches on both sides of the dam, with a common dock with boat slips for those sites that don't have docks, and a fishing pier below the spillway. This campground was closed for a couple years during the covid19 pandemic, for work on the dam/spillway, and the last time we were there with the kayaks was the last year we had the VW Jetta TDI which we had a rack on. Unfortunately the rack doesn't work on the Passat TDI, so had to break down and use the '04 Jeep. I was able to adapt the kayak holders(cut some mount bolts down so they didn't hit the Jeeps roof) from the Jetta rack to fit the Jeep, and it worked well except for the getting less than half the MPG as when pulling with the Passat. Didn't get much in the way of pics except when were ready to leave the house, but there are pics of most of the sites on the website link above.
Standard Electric site $26/night ($13 with Senior Pass). Not bad for electric, flush toilets and showers.
