550 / 560 Air Conditioner Woes

This is our second season with our camper. Last summer I used the air conditioner mostly as a dehumidifier and to run the machine now and then just on general principle. The past few days, however, Maine has been accosted by an absurdly hot blast of wind and in these blazing conditions the AC has not been up to the task. I had expected that it would cool the cabin much as the AC does in my car. All I can say is that it does cool, but not much below the ambient temperature. I've run it at max cool and low cool, and both seem to do about the same, except one is noisier than another. I've also tried it with a window cracked a bit. Is there a recommended setting that I just haven't found yet? I'm surprised that such a comparatively large cooler is so stressed by the heat. Just like the rest of here on the coast. Any thoughts? I haven't tried it at noon, but in the early evening when the sun is low and things have started to cool.
