Dutch Oven Recipe Links

Discussion in 'Camp Cooking & Dutch Ovens' started by jerry and tina, Mar 19, 2010.

  1. I took the liberty to compile a list from Bob Henry on the T&TT forum of Dutch Oven Recipe Links.
There may be more but here is a good start....

    1.http://www.macscouter.com/Cooking/DutchOven.asp
    2.http://www.macscouter.com/Cooking/GEEZERCB.pdf
    3.http://www.pieiron.com/recipes.htm (basic pie iron ideas)
4.http://www.mikenchell.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6828 (These are real neat as many are designed
to fit in a wide mouth mason jars(I prefer to use plastic water bottles) so at the campsite you have all ingredients premixed and ready to go.)
5.http://www.three-peaks.net/dutch_o.pdf (background is great need to know info for the novice on how to use and care for your cast iron.

Thanks Jerry & Tina, another great link to DO cooking. Our first DO is on its way to the local REI. I'm looking forward to giving some of the great sounding recipes a try.

    Interesting recipe link

While we continue to wait for the new DO to arrive, I found this link on a camp cooking site that George may be familiar with:
    Glorius One Pot Meals
She sells a book of recipes that I think are mainly 2 person meals, which would be just what we need.

    Ken & Peggy,
Perfect! We bought a 2 qt (8") DO at Bass Pro Shop last weekend! We are planning a 3 week camping trip up the CA and OR coast. With just 2 of us, the 12" DO we use with a group seems too big. I've been looking to scale down some ecipes. This may just what I'm looking for!
    Thanks for sharing!

Ken, I wasn't aware of it, but I am now. Nice sight. I too fall into the need of meals for 2. Perfect. I will visit the site often.
    Thanks for sharing.

The 10" Lodge DO arrived today - hopefully I'll be trying a recipe or 2 before the weekend's over, one of which will be a peach cobbler.

I think you will want at least one more, #8 or another #10.

I am serious. It is addictive.

    Re: Interesting recipe link

Well, I tried her Chicken Satay tonight and it was very good! Clean up was a snap - just a good rinse with hot water was all it took. I haven't made the cobbler yet, maybe tomorrow. So far, so good ;)

  12. Re: Interesting recipe link

The Chicken Satay sounds like a winner...I'll have to try that one. Will you post the recipe? We started out with a 12" and now have downsized to the 8 and 10 inch DO. Found the 8 is nice for the 2 of us and 10 when just a few couples gather. Only use the 12 now for large gatherings. Nice to have the variety.

Have you tried liners yet? Betsey got me started with cutting my own from parchment paper found in the grocery isle with reynolds wrap. It makes for a nicer clean-up. Usually just have to rinse out the DO instead of doing alot of scraping.
There are also pre-formed paper liners but they are alittle pricy for me.

Thanks for the liner tip, that should be a time saver. Here's the link to the Chicken Satay, although I think it's actually a link to whatever her current recipe is, so it may change:

Got it copied into my DO recipe folder...sounds good.

Have to remember to check this website periodically...have it bookmarked now.

    Re: Interesting recipe link

Copied the Chicken Satay as well. Made it last night. Very simple, not everyone would be carrying those chemicals/ ingrediants camping, so a plan would be prudent.

My wife and I thought it was OK. Probably not a repeater. But inexpensive enough to try. Don't let my tates affect your decisions.

    Re: Interesting recipe link

Ken did you cook inside, and did you cook at 450 as recipe suggests? My reults were not very appealing. I think a lower temp and maybe in needed a longer cook would do me better.

    Re: Interesting recipe link

George, we did cook inside, @ 450. Everything was cooked; chicken was done, rice was good, vegetables as well. I may wait for her next highlighted recipe and try it before I get the book. I'm looking for more healthy recipes to try...
