Hypervent Vs Froli

How's it working out for ya now, after a few more months?

Got a question for you and others with Froli;
on condensation under mattress in re: a recent thread with pics in Bear's re-established stories under adventures forum, (which NCMtnMan you may appreciate as a fellow mountain man.)

Whether Hypervent or Froli, or none, there is the possibility of water vapor either from own body down thru mattress (that Bear solved by putting a vapor barrier between sleep sustem and mattress),

or that might form from breath, finding its way condensing below on that colder floor, especially if you are not using/equipped with dry furnace and find yourself routinely in sub freezing environs.

Anyone with Froli notice a buildup of any sort of moisture below, or is the airspace and ventilation such that its not a problem, as in where you might need to wipe moist walls etc if windows not cracked, furnace not on?

This is probably a non issue, so not to alarmed, just thinking ahead if an additional vapor barrier under Froli, or the Hypervent, for anticipated long periods camping cold is called for...my belt and suspenders approach to avoiding things like mold, dry rot, much like in a marine environment on wood boats.

I suppose I'll find out for myself if I try out the HyperVent first. Anyone experiment with taping those two pieces together, and taping sides down on edges, to floor or walls in a semi permanent way to keep the moist air out from under there?

(I know, I know...its sacreligious to consider marring that beautiful wood cabinetry and fine example of WI folk art but form follows function, is my approach.)

Or cutting the HyperVent perhaps with overlapping taped edges, in cutouts for storage bins, like OP s did to fasten but lift out Froli.

I'm just noodling here...guess I'm collecting my own DIY hacks and experiments to-do adaptations like everyone does to feather their own nests...

 

If you install the Froli the couch seat will be lower in the flat position. I do not need the couch as a bed extension so it was not an issue that they are not at the same height. I ordered the queen Froli kit so I had extra Froli pieces and I put the pieces under the couch cushion so it makes sitting on the couch more comfortable for a 2 hour movie. I think adding the Froli was the best addition I have made because I sleep as well as I do in my home bed.

 

I cut out the HyperVent and stitched tape on some of the raw edges which were chewing up my arms. I can pull out those pieces of HyperVent and have easy access to the under bed storage. I have the handy cap bars and have attached a strap to each side toward the foot of the bed. A long adjustable strap goes completely under the mattress from side to side. I can lengthen it and snap the long strap to each short strap on the bars. As I lift the mattress I shorten the strap. The mattress is supported so I have easy access to the storage.

 

Hi Randy - we are planning on installing the Froli on our 560 soon. The queen set comes with 120 spring sets. Do you know if this will be sufficient to also put under the couch?

 

I’m sorry, I do not as I didn’t install any under the couch. Froli has great customer service, give them a call with your exact square footage and they will tell you just what you need.

There is a lady who does a Froli video on YouTube and she offers a discount. I believe her name is Randi if my memory is correct. When I ordered Froli for our Campinn 550, they already had the Campinn layout.

 

I got the queen size and used the extra for the couch. I was one short so left the middle one at the foot of the bed out. We will never notice it missing.

 

Worked with Elke and ordered the King kit yesterday so we would have some flexibility with sufficient firm versus less firm segments. Going to have some leftovers which can apparently be returned. Very good customer service!

 

Installed under bed and couch. Did not attach to anything under the bed. Used some velcro strips to attach to existing velcro under couch. Works great in both places. Also installed the tri-fold mattress at the same time - makes it easier to get at storage.

Very nice, we have a 560 coming next year and looking to do the same as you. May we ask the specifics on the order regarding the materials needed? We had installed the Froli on our 550 and enjoyed it.

 

We ordered the King kit and had some pieces left over for spares. All of the light blue pieces were used for the shoulder and hips area. Some of the red central stiffeners were used on the couch area to provide more "butt" support. What is cool is the ability to fine tune things to your liking.

 

I've got some time ... a few months like 8 before we pick up the 560.. Looking at all the options in setting up the 560 seems like the Froli system is well liked. I know a lot of people don't want to screw down the system into the wood, velcro being another option..

Wondering if anyone has used a double sided tape for hanging pictures?

We installed the Froli in our 550. We did not secure it to the floor and had no issue with it moving around. If you decide on going with the Froli, there are discount codes available on some YouTube videos.

 

I guess I would be curious about using the under the mat storage ? Wouldn't they flop around and move out of place ?

 

They do flop around and get in the way somewhat, you can still get in the storage but the pieces sometimes disconnect from each other. I found it bothersome so screwed them in and left the ones over the storage covers unhooked from the others. I waited until I was sure I was happy with the system and I was not going to remove them. I cannot imagine ever removing them so I had no problem screwing them to the floor. I got enough to put under the couch seating but I did not screw those down. I put a webbing strap through the cover finger hole because the "springs" got in the way of getting my finger in the hole so now it is easy to grab the strap to open the cover.

 

Totally understandable that you are squeamish about permanent modifications (such as drilling) to a new camper that you haven’t even taken possession of yet.

Of all the potential projects, this is very simple and quite functional. I used screws to secure my Froli grids by mimicking the pictures others like @Randy and @Old_Prospector have posted. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

You could easily leave the grid unsecured for a time. After a few fingerprints, smudges or scratches, you may find it easier to muster the courage to make minor modifications.

 

For all that have the Froli is your floor storage still available to you. If so how did you install it. It would seem the Froli is not attached it just installs on the surface

 

I attached the Froli to the deck using some stainless steel screws including a cutout square over the bin covers that allows easy removal of the cover and preserves access to the bins. Helps keep everything in place.

Some have used stainless steel screws to secure pieces of the Froli base to the storage lids. If you read further back in this thread, you’ll see examples by @Randy and @Old_Prospector .
