Easy undercounter storage

I love the undercounter storage organizers that have been posted, but this is our solution. Purchased the bins at Target and mounted 1/4inch strips as ledges for them to rest on. Lift out to access the stuff underneath. We find it great for "crushable" pantry items (read, "oreos").

It looks like the baskets are cut around the hinges. Is there enough overhang at the ends to make this into a sliding system that way if you lift one basket out you don't necessarily have to lift the other one out just slide across.

Wow, who'd a guessed that you'd be able to find baskets so near-perfectly fit to the storage areas? I am definitely Impressed (with a capital-I). Are the fore and aft basket rims stiff and strong enough to support more than just lightweight items in the basket without buckling downward? If not, I could imagine somebody cutting wood piece(s) that would be notched to fit fore and aft between them to help support the fore and aft basket edges, and to be lifted out and stored down below when the baskets weren't in use.

OMG! I have those exact same baskets and have been fiddling with them in our trailer -basically resting them on top of the stuff lower down in the the storage area.

If you cut the notch from the hinge to the left edge you could slide the left basket right (and the reverse), but I like the notch b/c if you only use one basket, the notch keeps it from sliding.

 

Sorry, other questions: the other undercounted storage that I referred to were the plexiglass and slide in versions for the lower part of the compartments (posted by a couple others- I don't know how to redirect to theirs). In terms of weight, these baskets are stiff. We have also filled them with apples but I haven't worried about collapse. These baskets fit so well that the ledge is very narrow and has no impact when they are removed. If shopping for these baskets, they have grey handles that flip out for stacking (but I just popped them out b/c they were in the way of the hinges).

 

We like your idea Karin, and plan on trying it, if the baskets will fit with all of our other modifications. Thanks for sharing.

Ok, I just saw this - I'm behind the times guys! Karin - you said you put a piece of wood to support the baskets - can you explain a bit more - size, etc.

 

I'm in the process of installing and am using 3/4" x 1/4" screen molding. I'm finishing them with polyurethane before I do the final install, so I haven't been able to test with a loaded basket yet, but they look like they should hold up.

 

My finished version:


I left the handles on but turned them around, so as to have something to
to grab on to when removing the baskets. When turned down, they don't
take up that much extra space.

The screen molding worked fine. I tested it with a 7 lb. bag of
potatoes and it held up.

Now I guess I'll have to take it out for a few days for a test run.
