Folding Bed Mattress Upgrade?

Has anyone experimented with queen-sized folding mattress to replace the original mattress? I'm thinking it would be nice to create a sofa in our 550 for more comfortable TV viewing and bad weather meals.

I'm thinking a futon-type mattress like the many available on Amazon would be as comfortable as our original. We wouldn't get the footwell feature available on "other" teardrops, but could have a comfortable upright seating position while waiting the storms out. Might be easier to stretch the queen size sheets into the footer as well.

Looking forward to comments from our fellow campers!

My used 560 did not have a mattress when I purchased it and I spent some time looking at futon mattresses along with the more standard type. I wound up buying a Milliard tri-fold mattress off of Amazon and like how it has worked out for me. I have two modes that I use: bed mode and sofa mode. For the sofa mode, I flip over the first section and then I have a nice little living room and don't have to put my feet on the mattress. It is also a little more comfortable with my feet at floor level. My camper came with a piece of carpet on the floor and I left it there under the bed.

I suppose with a 550, you could either have 2 sections as a backrest or seat. Might work.

    yes, I am using it.
I bought it from Nest Bedding Coupons at a very cheap price.
the mattress is too soft, comfortable and of good quality, I also suggest to upgrade yours too.

Did you end up going with the tri-fold? I keep thinking of upgrading our mattress too and wondering how this worked? Are you able to reconfigure it into a sofa of sorts that works?

I just bought one of the trifold mattresses from Amazon. Currently airing it out. Will let you know what I think after using it for a couple of nights. FYI, I am using the Froli system as well.

Hi, will you let us know if it fits just like the original mattress? Same size? I know one thing for sure, a tri folding mattress will make putting on sheets much easier for me. Thinking I could possibly pull it forward most of the way slip the sheets on and extend out the mattress while placing the sheets on. Picture would be nice if possible. Thanks!

I’m curious about this too. Making the bed is a pain.

Just pinging you again to see how the Tri-fold with Froli is working out.

I love the Froli system. I accidentally bought the wrong mattress. I meant to buy the 4 inch foam one but instead ordered the 2 1/2 foam/1 1/2 memory foam. It is too soft for me. I solved that problem by buying an inexpensive inflatable camping mattress for underneath.

The current mattress is easy to fold and get in and out so there is that. I don't recommend this mattress unless you like soft. When it is time to order a new one, I will give the 4 inch foam one a try.

So, your mattress is 2.5 + 1.5 = 4" but is softer than just 4" without memory foam. Right? Do your feet touch the cabinet? Or do you have a Raindrop? Sorry, I don't recall.

Edit: I see you do have a Raindrop...so your feet don't go under the cabinets, right?

Yes, the mattress is 4". My feet do go under the cabinets. I have not had an issue but I am a side sleeper.

I'm looking to get this tri-fold mattress mainly to ease changing sheets. We currently use an added memory foam topper on the original mattress and I am wondering if anyone has tried the 6 inch version? Seems like it would fit since it's like a 4" with a 2" foam topper.

Gregangsten, If you are not concerned about raising the mattress above the plywood floor (moisture control), then I would think a 6" mattress would work. However, if you install lift (hypervent or Froli) for under mattress breathability, then the height starts to become an issue pertaining to legs and feet room under the cabinets.

I now have the Froli and a 4" trifold mattress with 2-1/2" high density foam topped (sandwiched) with 1-1/2" memory foam. The Froli is 1-3/4" high, so my total mattress height is 5-3/4". If you purchase a 6" mattress, would this limit your options to later install an under mattress moisture control item?

Thanks. I'm in SoCal where it's dry (except for today) and have no need to get the mattress off the floor so that is not an issue. It might make things too cramped for the feet though. Still not sure it would work since it would be snug and I haven't heard of anyone else here doing it. My size 12 dogs might be annoyed.

We used the tri-fold (with the Froli) for New Years. I found I could feel the folding segments as I tossed (I toss) and turned. When we got home, I found that I had forgotten to put the thick mattress cover on it. That has helped immensely. We haven't camped again yet but I nap in the camper with one of our kitties sometimes and I don't experience that now.

FWIW, making the bed is still best done with a 2nd person but it is 'possible' with one. There's a lot of back and forth from one entry to the other when only one is person is making the bed. Before, with a replacement IKEA mattress, it was impossible to do alone.

I just got back from a week mostly in King's Canyon N.P. using a new 6 in. Milliard tri-fold and I am very happy with it. Yes, there is less clearance for your feet but I had no problem at all and the mattress is so comfortable, a big improvement in my opinion.
I think the mattress is 1 inch wider than the stock Camp Inn mattress, so it is a snug fit but it's foam and compressible so it still works.
