As of Monday 9/27/10 we ordered our 560 ultra.We are waiting for our(SNAIL MAIL)postal service to deliver us the purchasing contract and than we can return it with our deposit by FEDEX.

Congratulations!! As you said, the wait begins! At least you're farther along than us - we still have wait until our current RV sells. Never have owned a generator but we do have a porta-potti that we purchased from Camping World. It's made by Thetford and works just fine. When we had our popup we used it at night only.

Honda and Yamaha both make good units. Although it seems the epitome of arrogance and laziness, I have looked into an electric start with remote. It does add to the cost, but on a cold morning and you want to add heat and start the coffee, the push of a button seems very cool.
Oh yeah congats on the order. When will it be ready to pick up?

Re: your porta-potti inquiry, you might want to check out a post started by Jim on this - go to [camping] [gear & equipment] and scroll down to his [portable toilet] posting. I found it to be helpful.

 

I'd recommend the 2000w generator by either Honda or Yamaha. I see the Honda ALL the time when we're out camping, but I'm leaning towards the Yamaha myself because there's a company out there that will convert them to use propane.

For the toilet, I can't say enough good things about the PETT system.

Please check out propane consumption before going that route. I know efficiency drops from gasoline to propane, but I don't know how much. My home whole house emergency generator runs on natural gas, which is about 20% less efficient than propane. It costs me $50.00 to make $5.00 worth of electricity. These little things MAY suck up a whole lot of propane.

Also, I don't remember seeing neighbors mentioned in the generator thread. Please keep the neighbors in mind as they hate generators running all the time - or at all. Some campgrounds ban them during quiet hours.

When it is getting hot or very cold (under 40o)we just make sure we camp where we can plug in.

Our testing with a converted Honda showed about 1lb of LP an hour. So yes, the LP usage would be pretty serious on a generator compared to the stock gasoline setup.

L.M. has one of the converted Yamaha generators. I had an opportunity to test it. I thought the conversion was very clunky, that might have been because it was nowhere nicely done as the Honda we converted ourselves. Took awhile to get it run right but then seemed to function fine. I think though L.M. has had some fits with it since though. Hopefully he will chime in and give his take on it.

The way the gas tank on these units seal off when not being used is so well engineered it really makes them so easily transportable without having to worry about gas fumes and such. Pretty amazing setup actually.

Electric start with remote Steve? You caught my attention with this one. I can seriously see where that would be useful.

YES, We are in the waiting club now.

My delivery should be in December I think??. As far as the generator I will be buying the HONDA I went today and had a demo of one a very impressive unit!! seriously QUIET unit I was standing about 2' away and I could hardly hear it run.

Hilditch is right there are campgrounds that ban the use of generators at quiet time.

It will be GAS 4.5 hrs running time at full load and 9.5 hrs at idle with hardly no load per 1 gallon of gas. I will be using what they call "TOOL FUEL" this is what we use at our Fire Dept in all of our emergency equipment, outlasts regular fuel by 3-5 times longer,no build-up,very low fumes, longer storage and easier starting.

Evan I will check that out about the PETT system THANKS.

We also purchased a Northern Breeze screen room and a Brinks trailer lock set, which we read on this forum.

I can't say much more than already stated.

1. It's an item I've always wanted: I.E , Man Tools ; Air Compressor, , Skill Saw, Nail Gun , etc

2. Works Great on ' Gasoline '

3. I've lived thru two " Major Earthquakes " ( L.A. Calif ) and consider it an must have item, along with my " Raindrop "..

4. It's an item I don't normally haul around, and haven't been able to get it running reliably on " Propane ".. However, I would have purchased one, regardless of the “Propane “conversion option.

5. You should get at least " Two " extension cords, one to charge from the “Generator “directly into the raindrop, another to plug directly into whatever you would like to use (??) to avoid an overload situation.
I.E:

1. Orange cord is " Main Line ".
2. White Cord is plugged directly into Raindrop.
3. Black cord(s): Kitchen Toaster Oven / Hot Plate / Coffee Maker / Electrical Fridge, etc.

On another note, " Girlreinvented " had an electrical issue (??). I don’t know for sure what the problem was, but I’ve experienced the same type of situation. I’ve learned not to plug too many “ Electrical devices “ directly into the “ Raindrop “.

I.E: We were taking shelter inside of my Raindrop, while staying @ the Grand Canyon , due to the extremely cold night. I was using the “ T.V / Laptop Computer / Wallymart Heater / & The Hot plate to warm water for some Cup of Noodles. Well,the heater (AC Power) stopped working, & I initially couldn’t figure out how to fix the problem. I unplugged everything, checked the fuse , pushed the " GFI fuse " button to reset.

I finally figured out the “ GFCI Reset Button “ had to be pushed in with a small pen point(my fingers were tooo chubby),which is below the " FUSE " (Pen Point).

My Raindrop is stored inside of my garage,plugged in to keep the battery fully charged. I found it wasn't charging (two separate incidents) & had to " Reset " the " GFCI Outlet "..
So, I now check it, on a regular basis.

Something I learned this last weekend. At LBL NRA I filled the fresh water tank. I ran it dry last time out. When we broke camp last time the hose was removed from the water out feature on the utility compartment, but the valve on the trailer was not closed.
At this past camp, when I energized the pump it would not turn off and I had very low water pressure. It didn't bother me much. I just turned it on when I needed water then turned it off when I didn't. This was just a one day bowhunt, but I noticed water drops on the body of the trailer near the utility compartment. I opened it up and when I turned on the pump water shot out the open valve. This story may help someone if they notice the water pump not turning off.

So, Dave, you go from 42-foot to 10-foot. I think this is going to be quite an upgrade -- After all, your 42-footer probably didn't have all the same luxurious bells and whistles your new Camp-Inn 10-footer will, like, say, two side tents, alcan cover, and that great Camp-Inn customer service. Plus, now you'll have all these good folks on the forum to identify with.

And the oil industry folks will be crying their hearts out for the reduction in revenues.

Been there done that! on a cold grey foggy morning in Oregon...

Jean -if the cap on the the water fill intake is not SHUT TIGHT and you turn on the water pump -the person standing beside it gets a shower! The pressure in the tank sends the water out the available opening -which is the fill cap, even if the faucet is running.

Well, I just tried to rewrite and it did not sound better.
Lesson learned...make sure the valve is off and the cap is closed in the water/propane access. I had the door closed, and did not readily realize the problem was inside the compartment. Water flowed inside the compartment whenever the pump switch was on. Well, that doesn't sound much better, but I hope it helps.

Let me try.

The water outlet on the side of the tear has an on/off valve just like the valve on the grey water tank drain. This is where you would put the sprayer hose. If you remove the sprayer hose, or any outgoing hose, water will just squirt out here when the pump is turned on unless you turn off the valve. If you leave the valve on and lock the door it will run down the side of the tear until empty.

The water pump does not pressurize the tank. It will not blow back out any of the fills. It will only come out the faucet or the water OUTLET.

Moral, when you go to unhook an outlet hose, turn the valve on IT off first.
