Hitch and 7-Pin Connector for '09 VW Rabbit

Lampert Hitch installed: Class-1 Hitch, Prodigy-P2 Brake Controller, 7-Pin RV Connector (w/Brake and Back-up lights). Took 'em about 3.5 hours. Tested with headlights on and off (Thanx Cary). I think I'm ready to buy a "gently used" 550!

Us too! Joy and I will be your protégés. I think we'll have a lot to learn about CIs, TVs, DOs, etc. and this fabulous forum.

(Does anyone else get a tad intimidated by all the talented- and creative-types who post here?)

The folks on the Forum are great and willing to share their successes as well as their failures. They have made me feel very comfortable and welcome. I'm looking forward to meeting more of them and sharing experiences. That is when I start haveing some. I'm waiting for my build pictures.

 

Yup Jenn, the folks here appear both awesome and articulate. A bit amazing to me too that such a little trailer could bring together such a diverse group of North Americans. Joy and I love collecting and eating the wild mushrooms (e.g. Matsutake, Boletes, and Chants) which grow in our Colorado mountains. Maybe there are more 'shroomers in the forum?

Yeah, Anna&Steve may be waiting for my check to clear before they announce their gorgeous HAPENEST has sold. We promise to pamper it too.

I agree Pat. Everyone I've been in contact with here has welcomed us with open arms. Steve warned me that if I buy a CI trailer, you'd better be a "people-person" cause everyone wants to talk about them. I hope our "people-skills" are sufficient.

I think you're gonna love your 560. We saw Gary's in Erie, CO before he sold it. It was very sweet.

Hmmm... Interesting.... I can't see it very well but i had thought the 7-pins were "Round" and the 4-pins were straight like the one I'm seeing there... or is the 7-pin so dark next to it that it's hard to see...

I just learned about the 4-pin as the trailer I had to get only had a 4-pin. Luckily the Auto Parts store had an adapter you just plug into the 7-pin and works.. and got 3 of them.
1st- for the one I loose
2nd- for the one that's somewhere else
3rd- for the one I can use...

Costs a little more, but hassles a little less...

I don't answer that anymore other than "They start around "5k.. on up" When pressed for well how much... I just refer them to a website that I have on my card...

Everytime I used to tell them in the High Teens.. I always get how much cheaper they can do it... Sigh... Yeah, Whatever Turkey.... heheh.. Kewl, then do it...

 

Gotta love the ones who can't resist telling you how much better they can do something or how much cheaper, taller, run faster, jump higher, yadda yadda yadda. They are sssoooooooo insecure about some shortcoming somewhere.

I don't think we're introverted, just rookies with lots to learn. And we're kinda slow learners.

Sorry Frank, the black 7-Pin-RV connector is flush with the dark gray bumper. The connector's cover does indeed look like a 4-Pin Flat connector.

I bought a 7-Pin-RV-to-4-Pin-Flat converter, worked great too. As today I rented a Uhaul 4x8-foot trailer (4-PinFlat) to practice my backing. Not bad for a rookie, if I go slow and take my time. I find both using the mirrors AND looking back worked well. Also was quite please how well my 5-cylinder Rabbit pulled this trailer. Lights all worked flawlessly too. Hopefully I'll only need one converter--as I'm kinda anal about wiring and converters.

I've got all the pictures of Anna&Steve's HAPENEST on my iTouch. Everybody I've shown is very impressed. Nobody yet has said they could build one as good, even the "handy" dudes/dudettes in my working-class neighborhood. The detail does look exceptional.

Looking forward to pulling (and backing) a CI.

T, put your hand on the bottom of the wheel, then turn the wheel in the direction you want the trailer to go. Works like a charm!

 

Thanx EL&K, That's what I did, but I tended to overdo -- Kinda zig-zagged into the parking spaces. I think with more practice it should go smoother. It was indeed kind of fun, and gave me a nice warm feeling of accomplishment.
