SC State Park Barnwell State Park

Discussion in 'Southeast' started by Warren Mary Ellen, Jan 1, 2019.

  1. Checked out the campground when we stopped here to walk the dogs as we drove to the beach last week. Barnwell State Park was one of the CCC built parks from the 1930s. The park itself is small with a small lake that had a picnic ground located on it. The park rents small row boats, kayaks, and canoes. In addition to the campground there are a few cabins if you are meeting up with some non-campers.

The campground itself is not very large with around 35-40 sites. They were all back in sites with pretty standard picnic tables and a fire ring at each site. This part of the state is the sandhills area and is covered pines. It looked like well maintained campground and this part of the state probably attracts locals, fishermen (this part of SC is known for some monster catfish) and hunters in the fall. The surrounding area is mostly farmland or forests which often double as Hunt Clubs. It is off the interstates a pretty good but should be a quiet place to camp escpecially during the week.

The more you keep writing about SC State Parks, the more I want to explore that area. Thanks!

  3. Good, as public school teachers, I need people coming to the state to boost tax revenues here to pay our salaries.

If you check the state park website, they often run some specials. One we have used the last couple of years has been 50% off Reservations at certain parks as a Black Friday special. They do some others periodically at 25% off the cost. They don't include the 4 coastal ones in that unfortunately. The other geeky thing we are trying to accomplish is to visit all 47 of the state parks. We get a T-Shirt and our pic on their Facebook page for the accomplishment. So while I am going in to some of them just to stamp the booklet to prove I've been there, I am checking out the campgrounds if the park has one.

I retired from a public school system in Florida. Trying to visit all the state parks here, too.
